The Shakopee women's correctional facility in Minnesota is the state’s only correctional facility solely for adult women. It houses approximately 650 women, although it was built to accommodate half that. The U.S. is one of the top incarcerators of women in the world. Though far more men are incarcerated than women, the growth rate for female imprisonment since 1980 has been 2x as high as men -- increasing over 700%. Shakopee is spearheading restorative justice programs, in partnership with Prison Fellowship. including a "Second Chance 5K."
